Wedding invitations

Wedding invitations, sent as a link.

Choose a design, write the words yourself, and send one link that opens like an invitation. Replies come back to you, and nothing is printed.

A wedding invitation is doing two jobs at once. It tells a hundred people where to be and when, and it is the first piece of the day any of them get to hold. The second job is why the first one is so often done late: a thing that has to be beautiful gets designed for months, printed once, and posted in a hurry.

This is that invitation without the press and the postbox. You pick one of six designs, write your own words into it, and are handed a single link. A guest opens it on their phone and gets a full screen invitation with your names on it, not a photograph of a card in an attachment.

The reply is on the same page, so the answer never has to become a message you then have to write down somewhere. You see who has opened it, who is coming, how many of them, and what they cannot eat.

What changes

What a wedding invitation has to carry.

More than any of the other occasions, and most of the arguments come from the lines that were left out.

  • Who is doing the inviting

The opening line names the hosts, and in a lot of families that one sentence is the most discussed part of the whole day. Both sets of parents, one set, or the two of you. Write it however it is actually true, and put the names in the order that keeps the peace.

  • A ceremony and a reception

If they are in two places, or start hours apart, the invitation has to say so plainly rather than leave a guest to work it out from the postcode. An order of the day underneath the invitation carries that without crowding the front of it.

  • Exactly who is invited

Naming the people rather than the household is what settles plus ones and children before anybody has to ring and ask. It is the single most common cause of an awkward conversation four weeks before a wedding.

  • A date to reply by

Caterers want numbers weeks ahead of the day. A deadline on the invitation, with the reply form directly under it, is the difference between a head count and a fortnight of chasing people individually.

Wording

One that works.

Take it as it is and change the names, or write over every line of it. Nothing here is fixed.

Together with their families

Sarah Whitfield and Thomas Ardley

invite you to celebrate their marriage

Saturday 12 September at four o'clock

The Old Rectory, Wells

Dinner and dancing to follow. Kindly reply by the first of August.

The designs

Six to choose from.

Every one of them is a real invitation you can open, not a picture of one. Change the colours, the paper and the type on any of them.

Questions

Asked and answered.

The questions that come up between choosing a design and sending the link.

Six to eight weeks before the day for a wedding most guests can drive to, and three to four months if people have to fly or book a room. A save the date does the early work, and the invitation itself carries the detail.

A photograph of a card sent as an attachment does. A designed invitation that opens on its own page, in its own typeface, on paper with a grain in it, does not. What reads as cheap is almost always the delivery rather than the medium.

Yes. The link opens in any browser on any device, and for the few guests who do not use one at all, the page prints, and you can answer on their behalf from your own dashboard.

It stays online. The invitation, the photograph and every reply are still there years later, which is more than can be said for the card that went in the recycling the week after.
